THE POSITION
Washington County's Land Use & Transportation Department is now
seeking candidates to fill nine (9) Road Maintenance Worker I
vacancies.

The Position
The Operations and Maintenance Division is the public works arm of
the Department of Land Use & Transportation. The maintenance group
performs a variety of tasks and activities associated with the
repair and upkeep of the county's road and bridge network.
The Road Maintenance Worker I (RMW I) is the entry-level position
for the road crews performing a variety of manual labor tasks
connected with the repair and maintenance of public works
infrastructure. Examples of activities performed by the RMW I
include, but are not limited to, digging ditches, installing
culverts and pipes, raking asphalt, patching potholes, repairing
and replacing bridge components, repairing concrete structures,
trimming and cutting vegetation, and installing traffic control
devices. Additionally, the RMW I sets up work zones and controls
traffic as a certified flagger. The RMW I also operates assorted
small motorized equipment and performs minor maintenance on the
equipment such as changing mower blades, sharpening chain saws, and
cleaning tools.
Crew members are front-line emergency responders during inclement
weather events such as snow and ice storms, floods, wind storms,
and earthquakes. Work can occur outside of regularly scheduled
hours including nights, weekends, and holidays depending on the
business needs of the community and organization. Additionally,
overtime opportunities are available for qualified employees to
participate in scheduled overtime duties and stand-by assignments
for after-hour call-outs.

The ideal candidate will be reliable, have a strong sense of time
management, and enjoy the manual labor aspect of this position.
They will be a team player who can also work independently when
needed. They will be motivated and interested in public service in
order to make Washington County a better community. They will
communicate well with their colleagues, their supervisor, and
members of the public being respectful and thoughtful on how they
treat people. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be willing to
learn and be prepared to work outdoors in all types of weather
including hot, cold, and wet.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Washington County will provide employees with external training to
achieve their Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Employees who
participate in the training program will be expected to remain
employed by the County for four years following such training; if
an employee leaves before then they will be required to repay the
County 25% of the cost of the training program for each year they
remain employed that is shorter than four years:

Environmental Conditions
Work is frequently performed on irregular shifts and hours under
extreme conditions including emergency situations, inclement
weather, unstable ground, heavy traffic, high noise levels, dust,
poor visibility, at extreme heights and in close proximity to heavy
equipment.
