Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:The Assistant Nurse Manager provides direct
support to the Nurse Manager with administrative leadership and
direction in accordance with the organizational philosophy and
objectives. Assumes responsibility and accountability for all
patient care activities, unit operation, and staff function.
Ensures continuity of care on the unit by providing direct care
(when there is urgent need)) as well as supervising the care given
by nurses and supportive staff. Develops high functioning
interdisciplinary teams. Provides leadership in specific clinical
or administrative area. Participates in coaching, counseling,
timely effective feedback to staff and actively participates in the
performance evaluation process in conjunction with administrative
manager or director. Fosters highly skilled professional practice,
in accordance with the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) and
develops high functioning interdisciplinary teams.The ANM's
decisions and actions are based on ethical principles as outlined
by the American Nurses Association. The ANM practices in adherence
with the American Nurses Association's (ANA) Nursing
Administration: Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse
Administrators, the ANA Code of Ethics, the Oregon State Board
Nurse Practice Act, and within the context of the Nurse Executive
Competencies developed by the American Organization of Nurse
Executives (AONE).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES -
Performed majority of the time:
Works closely with the Nurse Manager, in conjunction with the Nurse
Leaders as well, to plan, problem solve, and facilitate daily
operation of the unit.
- Consistently and effectively counsels' employees, initiates
disciplinary action, communicates action to the Admin Nurse Manager
and/or director and participates as needed in follow-up activities
while focusing on the situation, issue or behavior, not the person.
- In support to the Admin Nurse Manager, is responsible for the
recruitment, interviewing, selection, and delegation of orientation
items of staff.
- Identifies potential staffing problems and notifies the Unit
Manager and/or Nursing supervisor
- Informs the Admin Nurse Manager, Director and/or Nursing
Supervisor of any unusual developments involving patients, staff,
equipment, policies or procedures.
- Carries out employee relations in a manner consistent with
current collective bargaining agreements and hospital policy.
- Uses computer skills in communicating and analyzing data.
- Follows the procedures for use of personal protective
equipment, infection control, disposal of hazardous waste and
sharps.
- Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following
established policies and procedures.
- Assists in patient and staff education.
- Coordinates nursing activities with other units and departments
to provide optimal care to patients.
- Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, implementation,
planning and evaluation to direct delivery of care to patients.
- Determines daily staffing assignments based on available staff
and patient needs in compliance with Oregon Nurse Practice Act and
Oregon Nurse Staffing law
- Completes staff scheduling according to staffing plans to
assure adequate availability of staff for patient care.
- Achieves financial targets for area of responsibility.
- Provides leadership and direction to the nursing staff, acts as
a resource.
- Provides expertise and leadership in problem solving processes
and tools.
- Plans and participates in nursing in-services, conferences and
designated meetings.
- Investigates ways to improve customer service utilizing
feedback from customers (i.e. patients, family, co-workers, other
departments, etc.).
- Demonstrates and shares the ability to face new challenges
(learning on the fly).
- Utilizes Hillsboro Medical Center's Quality Improvement process
to make decisions that focus on the customer and are best for the
organization.
- Respects and advocates for patient's and/or significant other's
rights.
- Formulates and uses effective working relationships with all
health care team members, patients and significant others.
- Involves unit staff and others as appropriate in decisions that
might impact their jobs, may include Unit Based Council
participation.
- Facilitates effective teamwork among employees and departments.
- Demonstrates leadership skills by supporting and acknowledging
interpersonal relationships and professional growth.
Performed occasionally:
Participates in corporate programs and attends appropriate meeting
to enhance communication and to assist in achieving corporate
goals.
- Communicates safety expectations and necessity for staff to
attend annual training.
- Provides informal and formal practice and performance feedback
to clinical staff, supporting their growth and development through
their experiences.
- Assures that quality improvement monitoring and evaluation is
implemented and maintained.
- Participates in continuing education programs.
- Assists and supports the promotion of hospital services.
- Participates in regional professional organization on a regular
basis to provide professional growth.
Decision making and budget responsibilities:
Decision making as needed to influence the department outcomes and
recognizes these decisions influence the organization.
- Assists the Administrative Nurse Manager in budget planning for
their areas of responsibility.
Assigned direct reports (not limited to the ones listed).
Nurse Leader, Registered Nurse, Certified Nursing Assistants.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Education:
Required
Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Master of Science in Nursing can be
used in lieu of BSN.
Preferred
Master's degree in related nursing field.
Experience:
Required
FOR ALL AREAS:
- Minimum of five (5) years nursing experience.
- Experience with hiring, staff development, and team building.
- Experience with quality improvement; developing initiatives,
monitoring, and demonstrated improvements in improving clinical
care quality.
Preferred
FOR ALL AREAS:
- A minimum of three (3) years' experience in management
positions within disciplines or areas managed highly desirable.
Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:
Required
FOR ALL AREAS:
- Current unencumbered license as registered nurse in state of
Oregon.
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS.Women's &
Children's Center:
- Neonatal Resuscitation preferred upon hire and required within
90 days of hire.
Preferred
FOR ALL AREAS:
- Nursing Leadership certification.
