The intended start date for the Fall Nurse Residency cohort is September 12th, 2022. *Note that this date may be adjusted based on operational needs.

Fall 2022 Residency Programs: Emergency Department, ICU, Labor & Delivery, NICU/Pediatrics, and Operating Room

The Registered Nurse (RN) resident under the Specialty Training Program provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities, and patient populations. The Residency Programs are designed to build on the educational foundation of the novice RN. Every participant in the program is responsible for providing safe, holistic care to patients throughout the continuum of this program which is designed to offer up to 6 months of didactic learning and clinical practice preceptorship to achieve the programs core objectives.

The RN's care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics and meets the standards/expectations of Professional Practice. Professional accountability enriches the RN's engagement as a leader in promoting an inter-professional culture of collaborative decision-making, innovation, life-long learning, and teamwork.

Specialty Training Program: Nurse Residency Application Process

Interested applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited Nursing Program recognized by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and hold a Registered Nursing (RN) license in Oregon prior to the start date of the Nurse Residency program. A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree or higher accepted in lieu of BSN, if undergraduate degree is other than nursing. Nursing Students are encouraged to apply while they are in their senior or final year of school prior to graduation and may apply prior to sitting for the NCLEX.

Additional admission qualification includes:

* Registered Nursing (RN) license in Oregon by Sept. 1st for the Fall Cohort and March 1st by the Spring Cohort start dates.
* Nursing Student candidates selected for the training program are offered a Nurse Residency position, contingent on successful completion of the NCLEX and attainment of an Oregon RN license prior to the start date of the program.
* Attend either a virtual or on-site interview.
* Candidates accepted into a 6-month Nurse Residency Program require a signed contractual work agreement. This commitment is in exchange for worked hours for a specified period of time within the specialty department following the conclusion of the training program.
* Participate in Specialty Training Program Nurse Residency Orientation Overview seminar following acceptance into the STP Nurse Residency Program.

* Delivers care in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and rights.

Department specific responsibilities during each orientation:

Operating Room (OR)

* The perioperative nurse, in partnership with other members of the perioperative team provides comprehensive surgical care to patients throughout the lifespan on both a routine and emergent basis.
* The perioperative RN is responsible for assessing patient risks and needs in the perioperative environment to ensure the safest possible surgical experience. RNs, upon completion of the specialty training program, will be competent in the roles of circulator and scrub nurse.
* The OR RN is responsible for planning, coordinating and documenting activities including but not limited to the following: strong observation and communication skills, excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques, vigilant surveillance of sterile field to prevent contamination, strong surgical conscious with the ability to identify and correct issues in real time, proper positioning techniques to maximize surgical visualization while protecting patient from injury, assessment and preparation for fire risk, assessment and prevention of physical and chemical burn risk, understanding of pathophysiology and response to surgical emergencies such as malignant hyperthermia, hemorrhage or laryngospasm, comfort with handling blood and specimens, assist with intubation and various intravascular lines, understanding of medical gasses and their uses, ability to function calmly in a high stress environment, often under time pressure, ability to change direction/plan rapidly, ability to maintain focus and strong attention to detail, ability to sit and stand for long periods of time, physical stamina to be moving/walking for extended periods of the day and to reach high or low to the ground as needed, and understanding of cleaning practices in OR's. The nurse will need to learn the differences in instrumentation and have basic mechanical abilities.

Performed occasionally but critical to successful performance of the job:

* Attends and participates in staff meetings, Unit Based Council meetings, in-services and continuing education opportunities.
* Participates in clinical looping within other departments, e.g. radiology, laboratory, blood bank, and other nursing units, etc.
* Participates in the Quality Improvement process to help make decisions that focus on the patient/customer and what is best for the organization.
* Follows correct procedures in unusual and emergent procedures/ situations.

* Decision making impacts the employee and the wellbeing of the patient.
* Promotes cost effectiveness through the proper use and conservation of supplies and equipment. Identifies cost saving measures.
