If so, please explain why and frequency: This position will be required to drive a County Vehicle periodically to access rural roadways not accessible via public transportation. Additionally, this position will travel to locations within the public transportation system but will be moving from location to location frequently where public transportation is not reasonable to complete the tasks efficiently. We anticipate this position to use a county vehicle on a weekly basis or more based on activities assigned. Eligibility requirements and more details found on our College to County website. What Does Transportation Do? The Multnomah County Transportation Division manages and maintains nearly 270 miles of roads in the cities of Fairview, Troutdale, and Wood Village and unincorporated areas including Sauvie Island, the West Hills and the Corbett area. We also maintain six bridges across the Willamette River. The Transportation Division includes six programs: Transportation Planning and Development, Road Engineering, Road Maintenance, Bridge Engineering, Bridge Maintenance, and Survey. The engineering intern will be assigned to the engineering department that manages capital improvement projects. Internship Description & Responsibilities: Multnomah County is seeking one Engineering intern to join the Transportation Division- Road Engineering. You will assist in and/or perform engineering technician duties primarily on capital improvement projects. You will interface with members of the surrounding community, the contracting team, professional engineers, planners and the County project management team. The goal of this position will be to gain experience on practical engineering tasks. You will be assigned productive tasks which may fall into one or more of several areas of transportation engineering work such as asset management, planning, design review, plan review, construction review, data analysis and project management. Other responsibilities will include; Assist the County’s project manager in responsibilities during design and construction of capital projects Assist the County’s on-site construction inspector in site reports and quality documentation Develop outreach materials and participate in outreach events for ongoing and for upcoming construction projects Conduct data collection and analysis of our transportation system Assist in AutoCAD design developing plan sets for maintenance and improvement projects Learning Outcomes: Learning transportation engineering fundamentals and public agency standards and procedures Learn the Multnomah County’s role and responsibilities to deliver capital improvement projects for the public’s transportation system Develop technical abilities related to engineering design and construction management Improving written and verbal communication skills with staff and interagency partners Minimum Qualifications and Education: Candidates should have completed one year in a college/university academic institution enrolled in Civil Engineering program Familiarity with Google Suite (e.g., Gmail, Calendar, Meet, Drive, Docs, and Slides) Basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of engineering mathematics preferred. Basic knowledge of traffic engineering fundamentals preferred. Basic knowledge of construction practices and procedures preferred Ability to perform designated shop and office duties as may be required such as project tracking, preparing and interpreting plans for construction, and/or understanding a variety of maps and drawings preferred Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing Strong problem solving skills Ability to work cooperatively and develop effective working relationships with diverse work groups. This position must work in the field as well as in an office setting. The candidate must be willing and able to drive; work in traffic; willing and able to work outdoors in various (and possibly adverse) weather conditions.
